Did you know that the global market for anti-aging skincare is projected to reach $93 billion by 2027? That’s a staggering growth rate of 6.7% from 2022 to 2027.

Let’s face it:

Most of us want a more youthful-looking appearance even as we age.

Now microcurrent devices are gaining a lot of popularity in the beauty industry and you might be wondering why.

Dr. Anna Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Miami Derm defines them as “non-invasive tools used in skincare that emit low-level electrical currents. These currents stimulate facial muscles, promoting collagen production and improving skin tone and texture.”

Simply put:

You get to deal with wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin using electric current in the comfort of your own home. There’s no need for surgery!

There’s a vast amount of options on the market but before we dive in, let’s explore the skincare products that can help to enhance the effectiveness of microcurrent devices.

Conductive Gels: These gels are specifically formulated to improve the conductivity of the electrical currents delivered by microcurrent devices.

They create a conductive layer between the device and the skin, allowing the currents to penetrate through and reach your facial muscles more effectively and evenly. This makes the microcurrent treatment impressive.

Serums: Depending on their specific ingredients, serums can help improve skin hydration, provide necessary nutrients, and offer additional benefits like anti-aging, brightening, or firming.

When used before or after microcurrent treatments, serums can help amplify the results and provide the skin with essential nourishment for improved overall health and appearance.

Research and Development Lab Manager at Genie Supply, Nicole Ho advises, “Consider hydrating serums like hyaluronic acid (e.g., The Ordinary Hyaluronic Serum) to boost skin hydration and aid device glide.”

Sheet Masks: Sheet masks are infused with various beneficial ingredients that can further enhance skin hydration and provide targeted benefits such as brightening, firming, or soothing.

Using a sheet mask before a microcurrent treatment can help prepare the skin for better product absorption, ensuring that the skin is adequately nourished and hydrated.

“Pre-treat with hydrating or collagen-boosting sheet masks to prepare the skin, utilizing the serum as a conductor for enhanced results,” Ho explains.

Moisturizers: Properly hydrated skin is crucial for the effective conduction of microcurrents. Moisturizers help maintain the skin’s moisture barrier and prevent transepidermal water loss, which can optimize the flow of electrical currents.

They also contribute to overall skin health and can improve the long-term effects of microcurrent treatments. Ho shares that you should “finish with a light moisturizer (e.g., Hatomugi moisturizer) post-treatment to seal in moisture and provide added hydration.”

Snail Mucin Essence: Snail mucin is known for its hydrating, regenerative, and soothing properties. It can help repair damaged skin, improve elasticity, and promote overall skin health.

When used in conjunction with microcurrent treatments, snail mucin can enhance the skin’s ability to retain moisture, support the healing process, and optimize the overall effectiveness of the treatment.

Ho recommends the Cosrx Snail Mucin Essence with soothing and hydrating properties to complement your microcurrent treatment.

Are microcurrent devices safe?

OK! I know what you’re thinking.

Is it really safe to use electric current on my skin?

Research approves of microcurrent devices as a safe option with few side effects. In fact, these devices are painless.

Award Winning Celebrity Event Designer and TV Personality, Samantha Goldberg describes the sensation as “a bit odd at first much like a tingle, but you do get used to it. It’s a prickly form of intensity the higher the current.”

She further explains, “You cannot hurt yourself with a higher form of stimulation.”

It gets even better

These devices typically involve minimal downtime. If you are a busy professional, then this is a perfect addition to your skincare routine.

“What I learned during my own research is that at-home devices would need to be used EVERY day for 10–20 minutes while you are cleansing your face at night, working or relaxing,” Goldberg confirms.

WHAT IS THE BEST AT-HOME MICROCURRENT DEVICE?

“I have used just about every device out there. I would say my personal favorites would be V-Shaper, NuFace, and Solawave.” Golberg says.

“The V-Shaper whether in office or at home is one of my favorites. The at-home version wraps around your face which basically looks like a V…it’s one of the easier ones which deals directly with muscle stimulation. It also has a remote so I can stay in charge of the intensity of the stimulation.” she adds.

If you need a portable option, consider the NuFace Microcurrent Device. Goldberg states that it “is a hand-held device which is generally small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.”

She further explains that “Many celebrities love this device because of the versatility meaning you can use this all over your body such as my arms, stomach, legs, face, neck and buttox to name a few areas.”

You’ll also want to explore the Solawave Microcurrent Device, which is perfect for facial muscle relaxation.

“I love Solawave as this device has red light therapy and uses a different frequency for stimulation in addition to a relaxing therapeutic warmth during a muscle massage” Goldberg explains.

From a Research and Development Lab Manager’s perspective, Ho praises The Refa CAXA Ray saying that it “stands out as an excellent facial device.”

She explains, “ It combines the gua-sha shape with microcurrent technology to provide a robust muscle-stimulating current. Its smart design effortlessly follows the natural contours of your face.”

She further remarks that “the gentle roller balls are perfect for the delicate eye area, while the crescent line excels at lifting the face.”

Lastly, for the body, Ho commends the Refa Motion Carat. She says that it has a user-friendly handle and flexible massage rollers that make the body massage comfortable and fatigue-free.

We’re not through yet:

Another appealing aspect about microcurrent devices is their affordability. Goldberg confirms, “The V-Shaper it’s generally around $50-$75 each and the Solawave around $145-$165 and lastly the NuFace device which runs around $245.”

You might argue and say that this is really expensive but I kid you not it is cheaper than the plastic surgeon’s office.

Goldberg says she was looking for less invasive ways to increase muscle mass or lifting so she might look more defined like in her 20’s- 30’s and she considers microcurrent devices a blessing.

She says that whenever she interviews people half her age on the red carpet, they ask how old she is and what she has done.

She adds, “It feels great saying I am using a frequency device for muscle stimulation as part of my skincare. I use mine daily and I’m definitely loving the results. I’m always asked about my age and turning 55 this year!!!”

Are you excited about microcurrent technology? Which device are you considering to incorporate in your skincare routine?
