As the famous quote by Coco Chanel goes, “Nature gives you the face you have at 20; it is up to you to merit the face you have at 50.” I think she inspired the innovations in the world of skincare.

Imagine turning back the clock on aging and revitalizing your skin using electric current.

Shocking! Right?

This is exactly how I felt when I first heard about microcurrent lifting devices. These life-changing gadgets have not only garnered the praise of skincare experts but also created a lot of buzz in the beauty industry with Hollywood’s elite swearing by their benefits.

How Do Microcurrent Devices Work?

You might be hearing of microcurrent technology for the first time but it isn’t a new discovery. It has long since been used for pain management and wound healing. In fact, its penetration into the beauty industry dates back to the 80's.

Award Winning Celebrity Event Designer and TV Personality, Samantha Goldberg confirms, “ I became familiar with microcurrent devices in beauty school as early as 1985. Things were VERY different in the mid-80s than they are now!”

According to Nicole Ho, Research & Development Lab Manager at Genie Supply, “Microcurrent devices are small, low-level electrical machines that send very gentle electric currents through your skin. Think of them like tiny, painless electric massages for your skin.”

She adds that they work by stimulating your skin cells and muscles, encouraging them to become more active and toned. This can result in firmer, smoother skin and may aid in diminishing wrinkles and fine lines.

Dr. Anna Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Miami Derm also approves of these anti-aging skincare gadgets and says “ Microcurrent devices are a non-invasive option that provides gradual results. Comparatively, they are gentler than more aggressive treatments like surgery.”

ARE MICROCURRENT DEVICES WORTH IT?

The answer is YES! But do not take my word for it. Let’s explore the amazing benefits of microcurrent devices with insights from an expert.

Improved muscle toning: Did you know that microcurrent lifting devices can give your facial muscles a boost and help them look more toned and lifted?

This could be highly beneficial if you desire to diminish the visibility of sagging or drooping skin. Goldberg confirms, “ I personally use the V-Shaper at the moment and it has molded my face to look very toned and perfectly shaped”

Enhanced Blood circulation: The small electric currents from microcurrent lifting devices can boost blood flow in your skin, resulting in better oxygen and nutrient supply to your cells.

This could give you a brighter and healthier complexion. Ho explains, “These devices help your blood flow better in your face. Think of it as a boost that brings more nutrients and oxygen to your skin, making it look fresher and younger,”

Improved product absorption: Microcurrent lifting devices can boost the absorption of your skincare products. By enhancing penetration into the skin, they allow better absorption of all those beneficial ingredients.

This means your serums, moisturizers, and other skincare products can work even better to give you noticeable results!

Ho explains that by using these devices before applying skincare products, the skin has the opportunity to absorb the products more effectively. It can be likened to unlocking the door for your skin, allowing it to receive all of the beneficial ingredients.

Reduction of puffiness and inflammation: Microcurrents can aid in decreasing fluid retention and inflammation within the skin, resulting in reduced puffiness and a more defined facial structure.

This treatment holds particular benefits for individuals struggling with concerns such as under-eye bags or facial swelling. Ho confirms, “They also help get rid of extra fluid under your skin, which can make your face look more defined.”

Muscle Relaxation: Microcurrents can induce muscle relaxation in the facial area, promoting a feeling of calmness after regular use of these muscles throughout the day.

Ho explains “After a long day of using facial muscles, microcurrents can give your muscles a little break. It’s like a soothing massage for your face, making you feel relaxed.”

Goldberg agrees with the R&D Lab Manager saying “I love Solawave as this device has red light therapy and uses a different frequency for stimulation in addition to a relaxing therapeutic warmth during a muscle massage”

We’re not through yet:

The benefits that this kind of technology could deliver to aging skin are exciting but it is also important to note that it comes with potential risks and side effects. Dr.Chacon, explains that although generally considered safe, microcurrent devices may cause skin redness or irritation, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin.

She also adds, “Individuals with pacemakers, epilepsy, or certain health conditions should avoid using microcurrent devices.”

I came across a comment on Reddit from a woman who expressed her dislike for microcurrent lifting devices claiming that she used them religiously for some time but she ended up looking older than her younger sister.

This had me drowning in a pool of panic.

There could be some truth in what she said as there isn’t much data to scientifically back up the effectiveness of microcurrent technology.

I had to heed Dr. Chacon’s advice and she said that to achieve the best results, you must combine microcurrent technology with microneedling and niacinamide.

“Microneedling is a procedure which involves creating tiny punctures in the skin to stimulate the body’s wound healing process, promoting collagen and elastin production,” explains Dr. Chacon.

“Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that helps to reduce inflammation, minimize pore appearance, regulate oil production, and protect against oxidative stress. When combined, these treatments have the potential to augment each other’s effects.” she adds.

She emphasizes that professional guidance is key “ Always consult with a skincare professional before combining treatments. They can provide personalized advice based on your skin type, condition, and goals.” This put my worry at ease.

But wait, there’s more!

Microcurrent devices deliver excellent results for people in their early stages of aging particularly in their late 20’s and early 30's.

Dr. Chacon remarks that they may not be effective for cases of severe skin sagging or advanced signs of aging. However, she also suggests that in those situations, more aggressive methods could be beneficial.

Who knew that electricity would be the ally that we needed in our pursuit of timeless radiance? Have you tried any microcurrent devices on the market? Please share your personal favorite in the comment section.
